The Positive Possibility Space

In a recent coaching session with a senior Silicon Valley Executive, we spoke of the challenge of growth and the key qualities leaders need to support it.
Deep into our discussion, she mentioned the absolute need for leaders to stay in the positive possibility space. It was something that I was aware of but had not heard so eloquently described. I recall that in my time as a leader, once the people, plans, and resources were in place, you then quickly needed successes to validate both the team’s efforts and the organisation’s investment.
Real and meaningful success is however never instant, there are lots of near misses, if onlys, and lost chances, somehow it is as if the marketplace is both challenging and validating your commitment. It may not feel like it, but this is the time of greatest growth, during which leaders need to sustain their organisation by staying in a space of positive possibility.
Supporting their teams through being both visible and available, staying on mission, over-communicating, and being clear to all that for each so-called failure, together you advance to a new more informed starting point for the next great opportunity.
Realistic optimism combined with excitement about the organisation’s purpose and potential will serve you well, remembering always that true sustainable leadership is as much about the process, as it is about the outcome.
