The Value of Contracting

Too often, we just dive into things and figure them out along the way. However, contracting, be it in the form of a short discussion, a formal meeting, or any other deliberate communication that leads to a mutually agreed approach to achieve a joint objective, adds significant value:

1. It is key for an effective relationship: with the objective in mind, we get a better appreciation of how our mutual strengths can best be applied.

2. Less friction: a better understanding of each other, intent, and interests means that there is less chance of frustrations and friction to occur subsequently.

3. Greater trust:  contracting allows us to develop greater sensitivity, respect, and empathy toward one another and creates a space where the parties can speak openly and honestly.

4. Better chance to reach the objective(s):  starting off with a plan to reach the objective keeps the focus on reaching it.

5. Greater flexibility:  although counter-intuitive, contracting creates more flexibility, not less, as parameters are clearly defined. Where required, the parties can always re-contract to make adjustments to prior agreements.
