The Rubber Band Theory is broken

In our recent corporate interactions, we hear reference to the rubber band theory. It suggests that in the next year or so, all the changes that have happened in the workplace, specifically around flexible working practices will snap back into place.
We will then return to pre-pandemic office-based, commuter-type work models. At Global Coaching Delivered®, we respectfully suggest the opposite and that we are in fact at the beginning of a new lifestyle-led work revolution.
Key factors supporting this view include.
- A significant group of people have changed their home location to prioritize family needs, for them to decide to now go back to the office with a longer commute is not credible.
- Many countries are now focused on a “legal right to work remotely”, with the onus on the employer to substantiate why this cannot happen, this will be a “game-changer”.
- Employers are already reducing their inventories of overpriced inner-city office space, with the presumption of ongoing hybrid working arrangements. These decisions cannot be easily nor quickly reversed.
- Tax structures are already in place in Europe, to incentivise working from home, or from locally located work hubs.
- Several European countries are accelerating their broadband roll-out, supported by the cost-benefit analysis of less commuting, more working from home, and the repopulation of rural areas.
- The Global Work Community has embraced the current excellent and improving digital conferencing tools that are available. These will only get better, as will our experience with them.
At GCD, we work with clients, to build on the current workplace realities, to both improve performance and their quality of life. Flexible working solutions, based on trust and delivery are simply too compelling to be discounted.
The rubber band that held our prior sub-optimal practices in place is broken, what defines us now is how we move on from here.
